Multiple formulas exist because ideal weight depends on frame size, muscle mass, and body composition. The calculator averages four established formulas and shows the healthy BMI range for reference.
These formulas give reasonable estimates for average body types but do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. An athletic person may weigh more than their 'ideal' weight and be perfectly healthy.
Both are rough guides. BMI uses height and weight only. Ideal weight formulas were developed for medical dosing calculations. Body fat percentage is a more accurate measure of health than either.
